What a deposit actually is (and why it exists)

A security deposit is not a fee. It is a temporary hold on your credit card that covers the rental company against damage, traffic fines, Salik tolls and the rare worst case where a car is not returned. On a standard sedan that hold might be a few thousand dirhams. On a supercar it can run from AED 5,000 to AED 30,000 or more, depending on the car and the operator.

The important word is hold. A proper hold is authorised, not charged. The money is ringfenced on your available balance, then released after the car is returned and any fines have cleared the RTA system. The problem is timing. Dubai fines and Salik charges can take a few days to post, so a deposit you expect back on Monday might sit there until the following week. If you are travelling and your card is also paying for hotels and dining, that block matters.

• Choose no-deposit if: you are visiting, your card is doing double duty on hotels and restaurants, or you simply do not want a large hold near NYE, Eid or GP weekend when spending is high

How to qualify for no-deposit in Dubai

Qualifying is faster than most people expect, and it is usually sorted before the car ever reaches you. We confirm a few standard things, all of which are normal for any luxury rental in Dubai. Residents and tourists can both qualify; the documents differ slightly but the principle is the same.

Tourists need a passport, a UAE entry stamp or visa, and a licence valid for driving here. Most foreign licences work alongside an International Driving Permit, and many nationalities can drive on their home licence short term. Residents need an Emirates ID and a UAE driving licence. A credit card in the driver's name is standard for the card-on-file, even when no large deposit is taken.

• Valid driving licence, plus an International Driving Permit if your country requires one

The catches to actually watch for

No-deposit is genuine, but read any agreement properly, the same as you would anywhere. The honest things to check are not hidden, they are just worth knowing before you sign. First, fines and Salik tolls are always the driver's responsibility, deposit or not. Dubai's roads are heavily monitored, speed cameras on Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Rd do not negotiate, and a fine from a fast run up Jebel Hafeet will find you days later.

Second, understand the insurance excess. Comprehensive cover included does not mean zero liability in every scenario, so ask what the excess is and whether you can reduce it. Third, check mileage limits and the fuel policy. Clear answers to these questions are the mark of a serious operator. Vague answers are the real red flag, far more than the word deposit.
